Sad news of the death of Colum Callan, RIP

Castleknock College Union was saddened to hear the news of Colum Callan, who died peacefully on Sunday May 30thafter a long illness.

Colm (also known as Colum) was originally from Port, Co Louth and educated at Castleknock College where he played rugby at Schools Interprovincial level.  After leaving Castleknock College, he played rugby as a second-row forward for Lansdowne Football Club and was a member of the historic 1948 Grand Slam team. 

Colm won his first cap against France in 1947, and was one of fourteen new caps in that game which included his team-mate Jackie Kyle.  Colm was part of the Irish team up to 1949, winning 10 caps, which included all matches against England, Scotland and finally Wales in Ravenhill to win the Grand Slam in 1948.  His last cap was against England at Lansdowne Road.  Following his rugby career, Colm worked in the insurance business.

The Union offers its condolences to his wife, Margaret and his six children.
