Michael came to us as the eldest of two brothers from Clonmel, ahead of the late Peter, class '66. He had already completed his intermediate certificate so was only with us for the last two years, but still made his mark, especially so academically - he won the Latin Gold Medal in 1962 and also features prominently in the Debating Society notes of the period.

Surprisingly there is no mention of the tennis which was to feature so prominently in later life as The Nationalist reports -

The death has taken place of prominent Clonmel businessman Michael Clinton.

Mr Clinton, Glenaleamy, Silversprings, was a chartered accountant and a director of Clintons of Parnell Street, one of the top ladies and gents drapery shops in the south east. The business was founded in 1915 by Mr Clinton's grandfather, James Clinton, as a tailoring business and developed into a high quality general retain drapery outlet.

The late Mr Clinton was a highly regarded figure in the community and will be sadly missed.

A keen sportsman, he was closely associated with Hillview Sports club where he was an outstanding tennis player as well as being a club officer for many years. His wife Helen is a former president of the Irish Lawn Tennis Association (now Tennis Ireland).

He is survived by his wife Helen, son Simon, daughter Gail (Killeen). grandchildren Ben, Kate, Tom and Ollie, daughter-in-law Roberta, son-in-law Maurice, brothers Pat and the late Peter, sisters Julie, Mary and Evanna, and extended family and friends.

To the wider Clinton family, we extend our deepest sympathies.
