Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the Vincentian Lay Missionaries (VLM) aims to support the building of a future for those most in need in the poorest areas of Ethiopia. It also aims to highlight the global issue of poverty, to advocate and to support action for change.

VLM follows a 400 year tradition begun by St. Vincent de Paul among the most neglected in seventeenth century France and who sent missionaries to Ireland and Scotland to work with the most vulnerable communities of that era. Over the past ten years 170 volunteers have been engaged in projects for the street children; in womens’ income-generating projects; in health and nutritional programmes; in helping sufferers of Hanson’s disease (leprosy); the deaf community and many deprived children’s educational programmes and teacher training programmes.

We work in partnership with the Daughters of Charity, Ethiopia, our hosts and mentors, in order to provide financial support and technical expertise to projects throughout the Country.

Each year students from Castleknock College and St Paul’s College travel to Ambo in Ethiopia to work with school aged children, teaching English each morning and sports in the afternoons.
