The 2nd annual Castleknock College Union past pupils Doubles Tennis Tournament was once again held in Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club on Friday 17th June. The event was attended by 36 pastman and whilst the weather threatened at one stage, the players’ patience persevered and we managed to play nearly all the allotted games. Once again, to cater for all standards, the tournament was organised in two separately graded groups, and was followed with dinner and presentations in a private room in the clubhouse. There was a full quota of players from across the country (and the years!) with a number of new faces. Due to the weather delay, the format changed slightly with the top two teams in both sections playing a best of 7 games to decide the final! After a tense finish, the worthy winners in Group 1 were Jim Hamilton and John Conway who had a great match in the final with the two Gerry Clearys (snr and jnr!) - including having to save a number of match points (and deal with severe cramp!). There was also a fantastic finish in Group 2 where Declan Hynes and Robert Dowley came from behind to beat Graham Jenkinson and James Callery in the final. A big thank you to David (Bell) for his hard work in organising the tournament and to everyone who turned up to make it a great event. Thanks also to Fitzwilliam LTC for allowing use of the courts on a busy Friday afternoon and for the lovely meal afterwards. Roll on 2012!
