Gerard was the first lay person to hold the position of Dean at SVC. He succeeded the long serving Denis O'Donovan, CM in 1987 and held the office for the following ten years and any qualms about a non-Vincentian holding this office were quickly dispelled for all agreed he excelled in the role.
