Both Harry and his brother Sean attended as students at the College, in a sense following in their father's footsteps, for although Senator Henry Barnville was educated in Rockwell, he served as Surgeon in Residence at Knock for more than 20 years. Harry was our dashing full-back for the 1943-44 SCT cup winning team although injury cruelly denied him his place for the final. However he used his rehabilitation time to good effect, for he was the Irish Gold Medal winner in the same year and also took the French Cadiz prize.

He was a physician of great renown, as his father was a surgeon, but Harry is perhaps better known as one of Ireland's greatest tennis players. He played in the Davis Cup and was at one time, one of only two Irish members at the All England club. Through out all his success, he never forgot his old alma mater and was a loyal and long standing member of the Union, where he served as President in 1974-75 and indeed as lately as May 2011, he returned to officially open the new all-weather College tennis courts.

He was a good friend of the College and will be sorely missed by communities at Fitzwilliam LTC, Milltown Golf Club and many others through out the land. On behalf of the wider Vincentian community, we extend our heart felt condolences to his family.

Requiescat in Pace.
