Joseph arrived to us in 1958 from Ballina ahead of his brother James, class '71. They were first cousins of that other Ballina Murphy duo of Peter, '66 and John, '74.

It was to Ballina that Joseph returned for the 1978 Chronicle reported:

Joe Murphy is married to Jacqui Hammond and is living in Ballina. Co. Mayo. He qualified as a chartered accountant through that prestigious Dublin firm, Craig Gardner & Co. and then returned home where he is now a director of Joseph Murphy (Ballina) Ltd., the family business, and also of Office Services and Systems Ltd.

Joe was President of the Junior Chamber in 1973 and had the honour of being national president of the Junior Chamber in Ireland last year. He is also secretary of the Ballina sports complex committee and chairman of Ballina Salmon Festival Ltd.

His hobbies include photography, golf (handicap of 12) and rugby—he is a playing committee member of Ballina R.F.C.

In the 90's Joe sold the business to the management team and his career thereafter focused on the Credit Union sector and most specifically the design and implementation of financial reporting and other systems. It's no surprise then that he served terms as Chairman and Secretary of the board of directors of Ballina Credit Union Limited from January 2009 to May 2013.

All that of course paled against the arrival of the sons David and Robin and the grandchildren that followed in due course. To them, his brother James, sisters and wife Jacqui we offer our heartfelt sympathies.

Requiescat in Pace.
